Introducing The Newman: The Design Inspiration Behind The Fitzrovia Boutique Hotel
When we set out to create The Newman, our goal wasn’t simply to build another hotel in London. We wanted to craft a space that feels intimate, timeless, and unmistakably rooted in its surroundings. A hotel that doesn’t just occupy Fitzrovia, but embodies it — in every corner, every detail, every experience.
To bring this vision to life, we partnered with LIND + ALMOND, the London-based interior design studio led by Pernille Lind and Richy Almond. Their brief was simple, yet ambitious: create a space that feels entirely Fitzrovian, one that reflects the character, history, and energy of the neighborhood while offering guests modern comfort and style.

Immersed in Fitzrovia: Design from the Streets Up
Rather than starting with a mood board, the designers began where inspiration is richest — on the streets themselves. Pernille and Richy explored Fitzrovia’s architecture, its palette, and its vibrant bohemian energy. They observed the layering of old and new, the subtle eccentricities, and the charm that makes the area unique.
The result is a hotel that doesn’t impose but belongs. The Newman is richly layered, confidently understated, and subtly playful — a true reflection of Fitzrovia’s spirit.
A Design Steeped in Local Story
Fitzrovia’s history is as bold as it is creative, and it naturally informed the hotel’s interiors. One notable inspiration is Nancy Cunard, poet, publisher, and 1920s bohemian icon. Her signature style can be spotted throughout The Newman:
- Sculptural bedposts echo the bold bangles she famously wore.
- Patterned floors playfully reference her love for polka dots, adding unexpected whimsy.
Beyond individual figures, the hotel pays homage to Fitzrovia’s architectural gems:
- Bathroom sinks echo the graceful curves of Shropshire House, a nearby Art Deco landmark.
- Geometric tiling draws cues from the Gem Langham Court Hotel, reflecting local rhythm and elegance.
These thoughtful touches create an environment where every detail tells a story, connecting guests with the city’s past while offering modern comfort.

Entirely Fitzrovian: Design That Breathes the Neighborhood
Lind + Almond’s approach was never about imitation. The Newman absorbs Fitzrovia, reflects it, and shares it with guests. From the layering of textures to the careful selection of materials, every design choice carries intention.
The experience is a delicate balance of comfort and character. Guests encounter the new and unexpected, yet feel at home amidst familiar echoes of the neighborhood’s history and culture.
A Hotel with Personality
At The Newman, design and experience go hand in hand. Whether in a guest room, suite, or public space, the interiors tell a narrative — of the city, its people, and its history. The result is a boutique hotel that feels like a neighborhood home rather than a commercial space.
It’s more than a hotel. The Newman is a tribute to Fitzrovia: its layers, quirks, icons, and spirit. And we can’t wait to welcome you inside.
